Birth Registration in Zimbabwe

Under the Births and Deaths Registration Act [Chapter 5:02], every birth in Zimbabwe must be registered within 42 days. The birth certificate is the most fundamental identity document — it is required for obtaining a national ID, passport, school enrollment, and accessing virtually every government service.

Did You Know? UNICEF estimates that approximately 38% of children under 5 in Zimbabwe do not have a registered birth. Unregistered births can lead to difficulties with education, healthcare, and legal identity throughout life.

How to Register a Birth

Step 1: Get the Hospital Notification

If the child was born in a hospital or clinic, the facility issues a Notification of Birth form. For home births, you will need a confirmatory affidavit from the birth attendant or witnesses.

Step 2: Visit the Civil Registry

Take the following documents to the nearest Registrar-General's Office or District Registry:

DocumentDetails
Notification of BirthFrom the hospital/clinic, or confirmatory affidavit for home births
Mother's National IDOriginal (not a copy)
Father's National IDIf father is registering or to be named on the certificate
Marriage CertificateIf parents are married (proves father's details can be included)
Acknowledgement of PaternityIf parents are unmarried and father wants to be named

Step 3: Receive the Birth Certificate

The certificate is typically issued on the same day if all documents are in order and registration is within 42 days.

Late Registration (After 42 Days)

If a birth was not registered within 42 days, late registration is possible but requires additional steps:

  • Up to 1 year late — Written explanation and standard documents; small additional fee
  • 1–5 years late — Affidavit explaining the delay, supporting evidence
  • Over 5 years late — Requires Registrar-General's approval, sworn affidavits from witnesses, and possibly a court order
Tip: For very late registrations, gather as much supporting evidence as possible: hospital records, immunisation cards, school records, church records, and affidavits from family members or community leaders.
